The Spirit of EBELES
Portrait of Elleanor Jean Hendley, founder of the Ebeles Wellness Center

Elleanor Jean Hendley

A lifetime devoted to
education, communication,
and community.

Former public school teacher
Emmy Award-winning journalist, CBS 3 Philadelphia
Producer & Host, City Lights
Founder of Teenshop, Inc.® — since 1985

The EBELES Wellness Center began with a search for space but evolved into a much greater vision. In many ways, it represents the natural evolution of a lifetime devoted to education, communication, empowerment, and community service.

My professional journey began as a public school teacher, where I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and the importance of providing young people with access to information, encouragement, and opportunity.

That commitment continued throughout my twenty-five-year career as an Emmy Award-winning journalist with CBS 3 Philadelphia. As Director of Public Affairs, later the Eyewitness News Education Reporter, and Producer and Host of City Lights, a weekly primetime magazine program, I had the privilege of telling stories that explored education, healthcare, families, and the issues shaping our communities.

Broadcast journalism taught me that behind every headline is a human story. It also reinforced a belief that has guided my life's work:

Information creates awareness. Awareness creates choices. And informed choices can change lives.

In 1985, that philosophy inspired me to establish Teenshop, Inc.®, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the personal, educational, and leadership development of teen girls. For more than forty years, Teenshop has helped thousands of young women in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, prepare for college and careers, and recognize the limitless possibilities for their futures.

Years later, while searching for a building that could provide additional space for Teenshop programming beyond our partnership with Drexel University, I was introduced to a property that had faithfully served the Germantown community as a medical center for decades.

I saw more than a building.

I saw an opportunity to preserve a legacy of healing while creating something even broader — a place where physical health, mental wellness, education, prevention, and community engagement could intersect under one roof. More than simply leasing office space, EBELES Wellness Center is intentionally cultivating a community of independent practitioners committed to collaboration and improving the health and well-being of the families they serve.

It is the place where education meets wellness, communication inspires action, and my lifelong commitment to empowering others continues — this time through a community dedicated to healing, collaboration, and hope.

Cute. Quaint.
Deeply rooted.

Sitting at 5801 Chew Ave, EBELES is tucked into one of Philadelphia's most storied and beloved neighborhoods. Germantown is not a backdrop — it is a character in this story. Tree-lined streets, walkable blocks, neighbors who know each other by name.

The space itself is warm and welcoming — nontraditional in the best sense. Not a fluorescent-lit waiting room, but a place where practitioners and patients alike feel at ease. For professionals looking to plant their practice in a community-rooted setting, there is nowhere quite like this.
